The course explores a range of supervisory models in the context of delivering supervision to novice and experienced practitioners from a range of backgrounds, and on a one-to-one and group basis.
Learners on the course will be experienced clinical practitioners (min 500 hours of clinical practice) from counselling/psychotherapy, CBT and applied psychology backgrounds.
The course combines theory, case discussion and through action-learning, offers a practical and supported introduction to the supervisory role.
Module 1 consists of a combination of short, instructor-led webinars, independent learning, and reflective exercises. A one-hour introductory tutorial, a one-hour monthly meeting, and a two-hour workshop are also included.
In Module 2, learners will provide clinical supervision to at least two supervisees and attend a monthly 'supervision skills development group'.
Assessment will take place via a written reflection at the end of the course.
By the end of the course, you will:
- Understand the role and purpose of clinical supervision in line with common supervisory models in the therapeutic field
- Understand the importance of ethical principles as part of the supervisory process
- Appreciate the governance responsibilities of the clinical supervisor in the mental health field, including those relating to statutory and legal requirement
- Be able to develop and effective contract for supervisory working with a range of different clinical populations
- Be able to use theories of therapist development to understand and effectively support clinicians at different staged of their professional journey
- Understand the implications of power and authority in the supervisory relationship
- Appreciate the importance of the supervisory relationship and be able to utilise relationship building skills and process analysis in support of this
- Understand the role of feedback within the supervision process and be able to undertake this effectively
- Appreciate the implications of the independent sector context in clinical practice and the supervision process
- Be able to apply the principles of effective supervision to a group supervisory context
- Understand the processes and dynamics involved in managing an effective ending to any supervisory process
